How we work out your hourly rate
Your hourly rate is your yearly salary divided by the hours you are paid for in a year. We take a year as 52 weeks and multiply by your weekly hours. Paid holiday counts as paid time, so it is included.
Your take-home rate uses the same steps as our salary calculator: income tax and National Insurance come off first, and what is left is divided the same way.
A worked example
A salary of £30,000 for 37.5 hours a week works out to £15.38 an hour before tax. In England, with no pension or student loan, it is £12.88 an hour after tax and National Insurance.
Pay per hour actually worked
Almost all workers are legally entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year (GOV.UK: holiday entitlement). If you take all of it, you work about 46.4 weeks but are paid for 52. Dividing your pay by the hours you actually work gives a higher figure, which is useful when comparing a salaried job with work that does not include paid holiday.
On the example above, that is £17.24 for each hour worked before tax.
What this calculator assumes
- You work the same hours every week. If you often work unpaid extra hours, enter the hours you really work to see your true rate.
- A year is 52 weeks. Holiday is taken as the full statutory entitlement only in the "per hour worked" figures.
- One job, the standard tax code, and no pension or student loan. For those, use the salary calculator.
