UK VAT rates
| Rate | VAT | For example |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 20% | Most goods and services |
| Reduced | 5% | Children's car seats and home energy |
| Zero | 0% | Most food and children's clothes |
Some things, such as postage stamps and financial transactions, are exempt from VAT altogether.
Adding VAT
To add VAT, multiply the price before VAT by the rate. For example, £100.00 plus VAT at 20% is £20.00 of VAT, so £120.00 in total.
Removing VAT
To find the VAT inside a price that already includes it, do not just take the rate off the total, because the VAT was added to a smaller number. Instead, divide the total by one plus the rate. For example, £120.00 including VAT at 20% is £100.00 before VAT, with £20.00 of VAT. Taking 20% off the total instead would give the wrong answer, £96.00.
Rounding
This calculator rounds VAT to the nearest penny. On invoices, VAT-registered businesses can choose to round the total VAT down to a whole penny (HMRC manual VATREC12010), so an invoice can differ by a penny.
Registering for VAT
A business must register for VAT if its VAT taxable turnover goes over £90,000 (GOV.UK: when to register). It can ask to cancel its registration if turnover falls below £88,000 (GOV.UK: cancel your registration).
What this calculator does not cover
- The Flat Rate Scheme, where businesses with a VAT turnover of up to £150,000 can pay a fixed rate of VAT to HMRC instead (GOV.UK: VAT Flat Rate Scheme).
- Which rate applies to a particular product or service. GOV.UK lists rates for many goods and services.
- Exempt items, imports and other special schemes.
